This rarely seen elephant ear is loved for its velvety charcoal leaf face with central charcoal veining, and a giant silver blotch in the center of each leaf. Most material sold as this is actually Colocasia antiquorum ‘Illustris’ (no central silver pattern and green veins). This 18” tall shade and moisture loving species spreads in the garden via short rhizomes (similar to Colocasia fallax) forming new plants every few inches. Throughout the summer, the plants are adorned with small flowers of yellow spathes and spadix persuation. It will go dormant before it freezes and then resprouts in late June.
