       The Lobelia cardinalis is native to damp areas, especially along streams in North America. It is know to attract hummingbirds. Lobelia cardinalis has long, alternate, lanceolate and toothed leaves grow on the stem. Tubular flowers in elongated clusters are produced at the ends of the upright stalks. The flowers are generally 1-2” long and are 5-petaled with two lips and narrow leaf-like bracts beneath them. The flowers bloom July through September. It needs to have winter protection in zones 5-6 to survive. It may be subject to slug damage in moist soil plantings.
